Compressor specialist BITZER, has announced a new 10-year agreement to extend its collaboration with Maersk Container Industry (MCI), the leading manufacturer of refrigerated transportation equipment and part of the Transport and Logistics division of Danish A.P. Moller-Maersk.

As part of the contract, BITZER will continue to supply MCI with 2-stage OCTAGON aluminium compressors for maintaining optimal temperatures for perishable food transport.

The semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors are the heart of the Star Cool refrigeration system, which was launched by MCI to meet the increasing needs of their customers with optimal cargo quality with the primary focus on energy efficiency.

The specific compressor technology developed by BITZER and the dedicated electronic control developed by Lodam, have contributed to Star Cool’s wide recognition of its proven low energy consumption and innovative cargo preservation features.

Danish BITZER subsidiary, Lodam, developed the system’s electronic control unit specifically for the Star Cool refrigeration unit.  Lodam, which has been part of the BITZER Group since 2007, specialises in control systems.

MCI and BITZER have been working together for more than 15 years. Today the Star Cool system is installed in over 250,000 reefer containers operated globally across more than 40 international shipping lines and multinational fruit companies.

BITZER's director of sales transport, Oliver Rathfelder, said the Star Cool system and OCTAGON compressors are a perfect match – just like MCI and BITZER.

"The transport sector requires elaborate solutions which we are very pleased to be able to provide together," he said.

BITZER's chief sales and marketing officer, Gianni Parlanti, said the partnership ensures cold chains for perishable goods are reliably maintained throughout transport – around the world.

Chief commercial officer at MCI, Soren Leth Johannsen, said technology and design are key as each company works together to advance Star Cool containers’ proven high energy efficiency and performance.

"We are pleased to continue the collaboration with BITZER and further build on the competitive strengths of Star Cool," he said. The BITZER Group is the world’s largest independent manufacturer of refrigeration compressors while MCI develops and manufactures refrigerated containers, dry containers and the Star Cool refrigeration unit for shipping lines, fruit multinationals and leasing companies.

The Star Cool Integrated reefer features innovative technologies such as Controlled Atmosphere (CA).

MCI, which has around 5,000 employees, has R&D and engineering test facilities in Denmark, two production facilities in China and one in Chile, as well as a global network of 400 service providers.
