The federal government will hold information sessions on the upcoming hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) phasedown which officially begins on January 1, 2018.

The information sessions, which will be held later this year and in early 2018, will explain what the phasedown means for users, equipment owners and technicians.

It will also cover changes to the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management (OPSGGM) Program.

Information sessions for Sydney and Melbourne will be held on the same day, November 30, 2017.

Hosted by the Department of Environment and Energy, the Sydney session will be held at Parramatta RSL while the Melbourne event will be held at the Quality Hotel in Tullamarine.

The Brisbane session will be held on December 4 at the Virginia Hotel in Boondall.

The dates and locations for the 2018 information sessions have not been announced.

Details of the HFC phasedown were first announced last year.

Federal Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Policy director, Patrick McInerney, said industry sought a gradual phasedown to ensure investment certainty.

Speaking at CCN Live, he said there is a standards and training review underway to accommodate the new low GWP environment.

The government is also looking at ways to improve equipment maintenance in a bid to increase energy efficiency and reduce leaks.

“More preventative maintenance by equipment owners will reduce business costs but we have to look at how we can do this,” he said.

“We are currently looking into a suitable program or maybe even incentives to improve maintenance.”
