Honeywell has announced that the 15,000th supermarket has retrofitted its refrigeration systems with Honeywell’s Genetron Performax LT making the refrigerant one of the most widely adopted hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) retrofit products in recent years.
Genetron Performax LT, also known as R-407F, was introduced in 2009, and is a lower-global-warming refrigerant designed to replace refrigerants that are being phased out due to regulation in Europe aimed at reducing global warming impacts from refrigerants.
Honeywell projects that by end of 2016, Genetron Performax LT will have saved more than 10 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, equal to eliminating greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) from more than 5 million cars.
Genetron Performax LT refrigerant is specifically designed to replace R-404A, R-507, R-407A and R-22 refrigerants. It can be used in retrofits, as well as in new supermarket installations.
During a long-term test conducted by ASDA, one of the leading supermarket chains in the United Kingdom, Genetron Performax LT consumed nine per cent less energy than systems using R-407A, and around 14 per cent less than systems running R-404A in medium temperature.
Honeywell offers two effective replacements for R-22, R-404A and R-507 in low- and medium-temperature commercial refrigeration applications. For R-22 supermarket retrofits or new installations, Genetron Performax LT has the best combination of capacity, GWP, efficiency and mass flow.
For supermarkets seeking the lowest possible GWP and nonflammable replacement, Solstice N40 (R-448A) has a GWP of 1273 (IPCC AR5), which is 68 per cent lower than R-404A. It is a hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) blend for low- and medium-temperature refrigeration equipment, including supermarket equipment, frozen food cases, cold rooms and blast freezers.
Honeywell Fluorine Products managing director in Europe, Middle East, Africa and India, Julien Solulet, said that as the lowest-GWP, nonflammable retrofit refrigerant available today, Solstice N40 is widely requested by supermarket chains that are committed to sustainable development.
“We expect more than 2,000 installations globally by year’s end,” Soulet added.
In the EU, systems that were placed on the market before 2022 can be retrofitted with Genetron Performax LT and Solstice N40 after 2022, and service is available indefinitely.
Both products can be used in new systems for commercial use below 40kW and in all industrial installations after 2022.
