ARBS 2016 isn't just about all the action on the main exhibition floor, there is so much more.

Not only are there plenty of opportunities to connect with peers, attendees can talk to manufacturers and distributors about new innovations, see product demonstrations and take part in a leading-edge seminar program.

Day one of the seminar program begins with a panel on the WELL Building Standard.  The session will provide a nuts-and-bolts explanation of the standard and its focus areas, plus explore obstacles to its take-up in Australia.

Panellists include Green Building Council of Australia CEO, Romilly Madew, International WELL Building Institute (IWBI) chief, Tony Armstrong and Norman Disney & Young group leader for sustainability, Mark McKenna. Panel moderator is Energy Efficiency Council president, Tony Arnel.

Another important session on day one will be a presentation by mechanical engineering consultant, Brett Fairweather. He will cover updates to Standard AS/NZS 1668.1.

Scantec managing director, Stefan Jensen will provide practical examples of low charge NH3 refrigeration systems reducing the recorded energy consumption in refrigerated warehouses by 40 to 70 per cent compared to HFC refrigerants. The afternoon panel discussion will be on the latest innovations in facility management.

The final session of day one will discuss retrofit of high efficiency fans in existing HVAC equipment to drastically reduce energy consumption.

Join experts from Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, Building IQ, Dexus Property Group, A.G. Coombs and Norman, Disney & Young to discuss the impact of big data on the HVACR industry on day two of the seminar program. A panel of experts will talk about how building owners are responding to the increasing demands for embedded smarts within intelligent buildings.

Automated fault detection tools will be covered by CSIRO researcher Dr Joshua Wall. He will provide an overview of latest software tools and techniques for achieving automated fault detection and diagnostics on commercial building HVAC systems.

Dr Wall will be followed by Warrick Stannus, group engineering manager, at A.G. Coombs, who will present a session on BIM to pre-fabrication designing to get the pre-fab benefits. Dr Martin Larisch of the University of Queensland will present one of the largest geothermal installations in the world, a 950 house estate in Western Sydney.

All of the houses will be connected to a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) which will reduce household heating and cooling related energy costs by approximately 60 per cent.

The system will achieve a 42 per cent of the communities’ peak energy demand and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 13.5 per cent compared to conventional air conditioning units. The system in Fairwater will deliver 10,000 kW of thermal energy which makes Fairwater the largest generator of geothermal energy in Australia.

The final seminar session on day two will be presented by Patrick McInerney, director, Ozone and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Policy at the Department of the Environment.

McInerney will outline the HFC phasedown in Australia through the Montreal Protocol and discuss the independent action Australia can take ahead of a global agreement through the review of the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas legislation. The opening panel discussion on day three will cover safety in design in HVACR.

This will be followed by sessions on Calculating Cool Phase II and F-Gas Regulations in Europe.

The second panel on day three examines international approaches to reducing HFCs. AG Coombs Advisory Pty Ltd project engineer, Andrew Barr, will explain how good projects go wrong. He will provide tips on how to reduce risk by adopting effective commissioning processes.
