The Australian Institute of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heating (AIRAH) has prepared a short survey aimed at identifying safety issues in the stationary HVAC&R sectors.

It is intended to identify issues, the impacts, causes, and provide suggestions for improvements.

From this information industry will be better placed to identify priority areas and identify ways to improve safety in partnership with regulators, educators and policy makers.

It is the first survey of its kind ever undertaken for the HVACR industry and coincides with the introduction of the new Refrigeration Safety Standard AS/NZS 5149.

AIRAH is working with a number of Work, Health & Safety departments and other industry associations to identify HVACR safety issues.

Survey results will be used to target priority areas for improvement.

A number of factors contributed to the need for a safety survey including the transition to low GWP refrigerants which will lead to new safety considerations, and anecdotal evidence of non competent tradesmen – industry needs to build an evidence base to find out if it is a serious problem.

Readers are invited to share their insights and to list any problems seen on a day to day basis in the workplace including the impacts, causes, and suggestions for improvements.
