Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Air-Conditioners Australia (MHIAA) has announced that the KXZ3 Series of high-performance R32 VRF systems has been recognised with an Australian Good Design Award “Green Tick” accolade in the Engineering Design category.

The achievement highlights Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ commitment to engineering innovation, energy efficiency and sustainable design for modern commercial environments.

Presented by Good Design Australia, the Australian Good Design Awards celebrate innovation and design leadership across architecture, engineering, and technology sectors.

The Green Tick is awarded to projects that demonstrate design excellence and innovation, reflecting the KXZ3’s outstanding achievement in combining performance, sustainability, and aesthetic engineering.

The KXZ3 Series was recognised by the judging panel for its sophisticated balance of performance, environmental responsibility, and aesthetic integration.

“Mitsubishi Heavy Industries KXZ3 Series is a high-performance VRF outdoor unit for air-conditioning systems featuring multiple indoor units in commercial or industrial buildings. Lower GWP R32 refrigerant and re-designed mechanical components including the compressor deliver improved efficiency. Engineered to be unobtrusive and to blend seamlessly into modern architecture, the Jury commends this technology and the positive impact it will have in this sector. A great piece of Engineering Design that sets a high bar in this category. Well done to the team for this achievement.” - Australian Good Design Awards Jury

The KXZ3 Series represents the next generation of variable refrigerant flow (VRF) technology. It is the first large-capacity VRF system in Australia to use R32 refrigerant, achieving a reduction in CO₂ equivalent emissions of approx. 70% compared to R410A.

Among its standout features are:

  • R32 Refrigerant Technology - single-component refrigerant with lower GWP and zero ozone depletion, enhancing environmental performance.
  • Compact Modular Design - up to three outdoor units can be combined for capacities up to 100.5 kW, offering installation flexibility with a 28 percent smaller footprint than previous models.
  • Optimised Airflow and Heat Exchanger - re-engineered components improve efficiency and reduce energy consumption.
  • Advanced VTCC+ Control System - automatically adjusts refrigerant target pressure based on indoor demand for optimal comfort and energy savings.
  • Optional Safety Accessories - integrated safety solutions such as leak detectors, alarms, and shut-off valves designed to ensure compliance with AS/NZS standards.

Together, these advancements make the KXZ3 Series a benchmark in energy-efficient commercial air-conditioning that meets the evolving demands of sustainable building design and assists in achieving favourable NABERS ratings.

MHIAA Managing Director, Akihiro Nakajima said the award reaffirms the MHIAA’s dedication to developing technologies that drive sustainability and performance:

“We are truly humbled to be recognised with an Australian Good Design Award for the KXZ3 Series. This accolade reflects Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ dedication to developing advanced technologies that not only deliver high performance but also address the urgent need for more sustainable and environmentally responsible solutions,” he said.

“As we look to the future, we remain committed to engineering innovation that supports our customers, communities, and the planet.”
