Carrier launched inverter water-cooled chillers and heat recovery chillers in Japan last week.

Building on the advanced technologies developed for industry-leading Universal Smart X (USX)TM Series in the Japanese modular chiller market, the new models feature inverter-driven DC triple rotary compressors compatible with R32 refrigerant as well as lightweight and compact design that enables flexible installation.

In recent years, heightened environmental awareness has accelerated global efforts to address climate change and advance carbon neutrality. As a result, there is growing demand for higher energy efficiency in heat source solutions, which account for a substantial share of total energy consumption in facilities.

Also in Japan, labour shortages are a pressing social challenge, significantly increasing the need for solutions that reduce on‑site workload and improve operational efficiency.

Responding to these evolving social and market challenges has become an urgent priority.

Against this backdrop, Carrier has pursued product development from multiple perspectives, including environmental performance, safety‑oriented design, increased capacity, ease of installation, risk diversification, and improved serviceability.

President of Carrier Japan, Mineo Maruyama, said that with these chillers the company has delivered high levels of environmental performance, safety, ease of installation, and maintainability.

Key features of the new series include improved Installation with lightweight design. It achieves among the lightest weights and smallest installation footprints in its class, enabling transport via standard elevators and significantly improving installation efficiency, particularly in renovation and retrofit projects.

The adoption of a DC triple rotary compressor achieves both improved energy efficiency and increased capacity of up to 50 HP.

The system supports a wide capacity range from a single module (30 HP) to up to 16 connected modules (800 HP), making it suitable for a variety of applications.

While harmonic countermeasures typically require additional equipment such as active filters, the new series is equipped as standard with a PWM converter, which effectively suppresses harmonics. As a result, no additional harmonic mitigation measures are required.

The chilled water temperature range has been expanded to 3°C to 30°C, enabling use across a wide range of applications, including food and chemical processing. The inverter compressor ensures stable operation with highly precise temperature control.

The segmented refrigeration cycle design enables risk diversification. In the event of an issue, individual modules can be isolated, and compressors can be replaced independently.

Users covered by Abound HVAC Performance can benefit from 24/7 remote monitoring that supports safe and reliable operation, along with automatic detection of fouling in water heat exchangers and email notifications.

Equipped with external pump control terminals for supply, the system enables reduced transport energy through flow control.

Additionally, integrating water circuit sensors into the module controller (MC) reduces design workload and contributes to simplified installation.
