The impact of climate in assessing building energy efficiency will be covered by Dr Ramona Dalla Pozza, knowledge broker for the Climate Systems Hub, at Building Simulation 2025.

The session will be used to produce prototype weather files for 12 locations across Australia.

The Climate Systems Hub is a research initiative focused on understanding Australia's climate, its extremes, and the factors that influence them, with the goal of informing climate adaptation strategies.

It is part of the National Environmental Science Program (NESP) and is hosted by CSIRO in partnership with other leading climate research institutions in Australia.

Dalla Pozza is responsible for coordinating a team of state and territory government knowledge brokers, actively building collaborative partnerships to provide fit-for-purpose future climate information for decision-makers.

Current building energy efficiency modelling for the approval of new buildings is assessed using a sample of actual weather data from the past.

However, as climate is changing, and as buildings designed today have an expected lifespan of approximately 50 years, building designs need to consider the future climate.

Previous attempts at integrating future climate projections for residential buildings have received critical feedback from across industry and the climate science community as they only capture average future temperatures (not extremes).

In her presentation Dalla Pozza will try to address this problem by developing a dataset-agnostic methodology for generating location-specific future weather files for Typical Meteorological Year (TMY), and three Extreme Meteorological Year (XMY) files representing the most intense, the most severe, and the longest heatwaves using outputs from regional climate models.

Building Simulation 2025 will be held from August 24-27 at the Brisbane Convention Centre, alongside ARBSQLD which will be held from August 27-28, 2025.
