A study by CSIRO has found that ocean waves could supply about 10 per cent of Australia’s electricity by 2050. This is equivalent to powering a city the size of Melbourne.

CSIRO Wealth from Oceans Flagship director, Ian Cresswell, has released the Ocean
renewable energy: 2015-2050 report investigating wave energy technology.

Cresswell said he hopes it will inform the ocean energy industry, government and investors about the challenges and potential for the technology.

The areas that could benefit most from tidal technology include Perth, the southern coastline and to a lesser extent the east coast of Australia.

The CSIRO is also supporting neighbouring countries in developing climate
change projections.

Last month Australian and Vietnamese climate scientists met in Hanoi. CSIRO scientist, Dr Jack Katzfey, said Vietnam is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, particularly in the Mekong Delta where rising sea levels, salt water intrusion and flooding are already affecting coastal communities.

The CSIRO is internationally recognised for its climate change modelling and has undertaken similar projections to support climate change planning in the Pacific and
in Indonesia.
