The federal government has convened a national meeting with building industry leaders to address the influx of non-conforming building products flooding the Australian market.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Industry, Bob Baldwin, said faulty products are not meeting Australian standards and causing significant risk of fire or failing the most basic of stress tests.

“Families building a new home or renovating their home should be able to have confidence that their dream build is being completed to the highest standards with the best quality products," Baldwin said.

“I have called this meeting today to develop an action strategy with industry to stop these unsafe practices from occurring."

A recent ACCC investigation resulted in an urgent recall of faulty electrical wiring affecting an estimated 40,000 households and businesses across Australia.

Moreover, an Australian Industry Group survey found that 92 per cent of builders surveyed had been offered faulty materials or products to buy.

Industry members attending include the Master Builders Association, Housing Industry Association and Property Council of Australia.

Faulty building material can be reported to the ACCC.
