The HVAC&R industry is bracing for the fallout that will accompany the introduction of carbon pricing on July 1, 2012.

While carbon pricing is central to the federal government’s move toward a clean energy future, sections of the refrigeration industry are firmly opposed to the tax (turn to p58 for the full story).

The 2012-13 federal budget included a range of measures to drive energy efficiency and assist in the transition to a low carbon economy.

This included $37.1 million in funding over four years to introduce standards and a nationally consistent legislative framework to regulate the energy efficiency of equipment and appliances.

However, tax breaks for the Green Buildings Program have been dropped in a bid to save $405.2 million.

Chief executive of the Green Building Council of Australia, Romilly Madew, described the decision as extremely disappointing.

“Buildings represent the fastest, most cost-effective opportunity to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions,” she said.

“The Australian government has cowardly chosen to renege on its commitment.”
