Air conditioning  won't be installed at Leichhardt and Balmain town halls as Leichhardt Council aims to become carbon neutral by the end of the year.

Leichhardt Mayor Darcy Byrne said the council would be able to receive accreditation from the federal government as a carbon neutral organisation by the end of 2012.

One of the initiatives was deciding against installing air conditioning in the main halls in the Leichhardt and Balmain town halls, while portable heating for the halls will be investigated.

Other council plans include a co-generation system at Leichhardt Park Aquatic Centre for pool heating.

This will save an estimated 1200 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year when completed in March next year.

The council will purchase 25 per cent GreenPower for some of the highest energy-consuming facilities.

"It is important we continue to reduce emissions not just through purchasing GreenPower, but by changing the way council operates,'' Cr Byrne said. `

`The co-generation plant we are building at Leichhardt pool, our largest user of electricity, is an example of how we can reduce emissions and costs in the long term.''

"The council is committed to purchase enough GreenPower and offsets to be carbon neutral by the end of 2012."
