The head of sustainability at Mirvac, Paul Edwards, today explained why property developers are responsible for sustainability.
Delivering the keynote address at the ARBS Exhibition, Edwards said developers shape communities and in that role their influence is enormous.
That's why the big end of town is stepping up their game and being more accountable.
Starting in its own back yard, Mirvac has set corporate targets such as a 15 per cent reduction in potable water use by 2018 and zero waste by 2030.
“Targets like these must extend more broadly to our built environment,” Edwards told delegates in his opening address.
“Industry has a collective responsibility to be more sustainable and this applies to HVAC given that 60 per cent of a building's energy consumption goes to heating, ventilation and air conditioning.
“Smarter thinking and re-imagining resources are critical factors for the built environment for the future.”
His address was followed by a panel discussion on adapting buildings for climate change.
There are 250 exhibitors participating in ARBS this year and more than 2,000 visitors are expected on day one of the three day event.
