Mechanical pipe joining and fire protection systems company, Victaulic, this week launched the Vortex 500, Vortex 1000 and Vortex 1500 Fire Suppression Systems, designed specifically for mission critical applications such as data centres, control rooms and machinery spaces.

A 100 per cent green technology, Victaulic Vortex features innovative technology which can extinguish fires without the use of any toxic chemicals. A low pressure mix of water and nitrogen removes oxygen from the hazard, suffocating the fire.

The swirling distribution fills the hazard space at 40 MPH and quickly extinguishes the fire with little to no water presence.

Victaulic vice president for Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia, David Sharkey, said Vortex provides an innovative, safe and effective fire protection solution for Australian customers in the information technology equipment, motor control centre and high cost machinery and infrastructure areas.

"The unique hybrid technology releases a water droplet of around 10 microns in size, eliminating any appreciable wetting of equipment or surrounding space. These ultra-fine water particles feature heat-absorbing surface area 90 times greater than those generated by standard sprinklers," he said.

“We have already had a great response from our Australian customers, with two pre sales. The Vortex 500 system has been secured for a major power distributor in Victoria, which will protect a small housing with a transformer inside it. The Vortex 1500 system has also been selected to protect boilers at a major pulp mill in Tasmania.”

Victaulic Vortex extends the boundaries of existing technologies by providing supreme protection and fire suppression with limited residual moisture, no toxic chemicals and full design flexibility.

The system has the capacity to seamlessly integrate with alarm and detection systems as well as facility security technology, and unlike other technologies that use toxic agents, can activate immediately upon detection of a fire without having to wait for evacuation.

Victaulic Vortex can be utilised in a sealed or open space and boasts flexible self-contained design, minimal water presence, effortless clean-up, economical recharge, immediate activation, rapid reset after discharge to minimise facility downtime and no need for room integrity.

Vortex global sales manager, Ian MacInnis, is visiting Australia from Canada presenting seminars on the latest advances in water mist technologies.

He presented on Monday in Perth and is currently in Sydney.

"Vortex is quick and easy to install and most importantly, inexpensive to refill. Also, the room doesn't have to be sealed or no added ventilation is required. It's an effective, green technology which is challenging conventional fire protection methods," MacInnis said.
