Brisbane Markets Limited (BML) has selected Todae Solar to install a 1.06MW rooftop solar system through a winning bid brokered by Solar Choice.

The system will be Australia’s largest privately owned rooftop system and one of the top 10 largest installations across the country.

BML CEO, Andrew Young, said he hopes the installation acts as a catalyst for other organisations around the country to sit up and take notice. Construction on the system is expected to commence in early 2015.

"As an organisation, Brisbane Markets Limited has been looking at alternative energy sources to reduce our dependence on grid electricity and our exposure to the massive cost escalations we have seen in recent years," Young said.

"We believe that solar power will be a key part of the future electricity mix and after a number of feasibility assessments considered that the time was right to move with the installation of a sustainable energy platform.

"Ultimately, we will have a significant portion of our energy generated from our own rooftop solar installations.

"Given the current energy landscape, we decided to initiate this pilot project to show our leadership within the local and wider communities.”

On being awarded the project, CEO of Todae Solar, Danin Kahn said this is a ground-breaking solar project.

"We look forward to delivering the 1.06MW project for Brisbane Markets that will hopefully act as a catalyst for other organisations to seriously consider generating their own power through solar. This is a very important milestone in the development of the commercial solar sector in Australia," Kahn said.

The project includes the installation of 3350 Jinko Solar 315w Modules and ABB/PowerOne Inverters (33 PVI27.6 + 3 PVI20).

Todae Solar has installed thousands of solar power systems across Australia including Parliament House in Canberra, the University of NSW and Accor Hotels.
