Steam and hot water boilers are no longer as hot as they use to be with technicians choosing to work in other areas of HVACR.

Less people are working with steam and hot water boilers because its a job that doesn't really have the “cool factor" instead they are choosing to become environment engineers or to work in construction.

Simons Boilers marketing manager, Toni Simons, said its important area of the industry because every commercial building, factory, hospital, hotel and manufacturing facility has either a hot water boiler or a steam boiler.

To keep industry up to date with all the latest information on steam and hot water boilers, Simons is involved in organising a half day course with the support of the NSW Office of the Environment and Heritage which provides businesses with incentives for gas efficiency projects.

"The course will provide tips on choosing the right boiler, advice on specifications and installation," she said.

“We will run it in Sydney and then repeat it in other major capital cities depending on the level of interest."

The first training session will be held in Sydney on June 22 and registration is free. To register email toni@simonsboiler.com.au

Refrigeration consultant Steve Gill of Steve Gill Associates agrees that the HVACR industry isn't the sexiest career choice but believes industry doesn't engage in enough self promotion.

In a bid to attract more interest in the industry and to encourage younger people to seek out a career in HVACR, Gill created a series of posters that were shared on social media.

The posters received more than a million views on LinkedIn. Each poster points out the importance of the industry with messages such as "refrigeration is at the heart of modern life, surgeons operate in air conditioned theatres and chilled vaccines are delivered to millions in need....”

“We are in a hidden industry that nobody  notices until there is a problem," Gill said. "We are under-valued and need to promote ourselves more to attract more people to the industry so that we get the very best in the market."
