Equinix has announced it's expanding its presence in the Asia-Pacific and Australian markets with a 13,000 square metre (140,000 square foot) site in Melbourne, Victoria.

The $US60 million facility is set to open at the end of the year.

The launch of the company's first site in Melbourne, ME1, will help meet strong regional demand for premium data centre services, which comes amid growth in data consumption and cloud services in the Australian and global IT markets.

Equinix's Melbourne data cente will be strategically located in Port Melbourne, about 2.5 kilometers from the CBD and joins an extensive list of 19 state-of-the-art Equinix facilities throughout the Asia-Pacific.

It will have the capacity for 1,500 cabinets, with the first phase of 375 cabinets scheduled for completion in Q4 2014.

Victoria’s ICT minister, Gordon Rich-Phillips, says the Equinix investment will create around 20 new jobs by the first quarter of 2015.

Equinix, which operates over 95 other data centres in 32 countries, also has three facilities based in Sydney.
