A total of 10 awards were presented last week at the Norman, Disney & Young 2013 Excellence Awards, which received a record 148 entries.
The Nebo Rail Maintenance Facility project took out two of this year’s excellence awards from a shortlist of 27 finalists.
The Nebo project was winner in the categories of Best Project Over $20 million and Exemplar Documentation, reflecting the scale of the project and quality of design documentation prepared by the NDY team.
“To win two separate award categories is testament to the work of the entire project team,” NDY associate and Nebo project representative, Jonathan McCowen, said.
“Although the $180m Nebo facility presented some logistical challenges due to its remote location in northern Queensland, our 3D modelling allowed us to accurately geo-reference all elements of the project.
“We were able to test the design and coordination virtually on the model prior to building works, so the majority of issues were sorted before we went on site.”
NDY CEO Ian Hopkins said this was the second year of the NDY Excellence Awards, a program which expanded upon the previous four years of the NDY Innovation Awards.
NDY Engineer of the Year Award went to Michael Priest of Melbourne, while the Innovation Award for Business Process Improvement went to Auckland's Tim Beresford.
The David Norman Young Engineer of the Year Award went to Adelaide's John Versace.
