A number of Qantas passengers were hospitalised while some of the flight crew were treated for heat exposure after an air conditioner broke down on a flight yesterday.

One passenger said the temperature in the cabin of the aircraft soared to 40 degrees Celsius.

The Qantas flight was travelling from Sydney to Lord Howe Island when it was forced back due to "a technical issue with the air conditioning system," a spokesperson said.

Once the plane landed ambulance crews assessed 30 passengers.

Two passengers were hospitalised with dehydration while others suffered heat exposure, the Daily Telegraph reported.
