Standards Australia has published a revised Australian Standard for garage doors.
AS/NZS 4505: 2012 covers the design, construction, and installation of garage doors and other large access doors in external walls of buildings.
Standards Australia CEO Colin Blair said it became clear garage doors were a point of weakness during Cyclone Yasi.
"As a result our technical committee has updated the Australian/New Zealand Standard to improve building resilience," he said.
The standard addresses minimum performance requirements for structural loads, as well as manufacturing and installation issues, and will be referenced as part of the National Construction Code in particular wind regions.
Groups represented on Technical Committee BD-014, which was responsible for revising the standard includes Consult Australia, the Cyclone Testing Station, Australian Building Codes Board, Australian Garage Door Association and the Australian Steel Institute.
The requirements of the standard are aligned to AS/NZS 1170.2 Structural actions – Part 2 wind actions and AS/NZS 4055:2012 Wind loads for housing, which has recently been published.
"These documents are now fundamental to Australia's building and construction landscape," Blair said.
