Most HVAC services contractors, especially those in refrigeration, know the risks of working with gases and refrigerant but few are aware of the hidden hazardous contaminants that lurk within a building’s HVAC system.
Pro-Visual Publishing in collaboration with the Air Conditioning and Mechanical Contractors Association (AMCA) have released a safety guide highlighting a range of different risks technicians face on the job, especiall in relation to asbestos.
Pro-Visual Publishing CEO, John Hutchings, said asbestos can be found in HVAC systems that were built pre-1980.
“During this time period it was common to use asbestos products as a form of insulation,” he said.
“Therefore, it is essential that HVAC contractors understand the risks associated with asbestos
“The problem is, many who’ve been exposed to poisonous or carcinogenic hazards usually have no idea what they‘ve been exposed to, and symptoms may not show straight away.
“Therefore, it is essential that HVAC contractors know how to identify asbestos and also safely manage work tasks where asbestos may be present on a daily basis.”
Along with other prominent safety topics, such as working in confined spaces and testing duct leakage, the guide provides a snapshot of some of the safety issues currently facing contractors and mechanics
Each chart is practical and informative, providing a quick reference point for management and staff.
