The City of Melbourne is making it easy for commercial and industrial businesses to go solar.

To achieve its zero net emissions target by 2020, the council is offering a number of rebates for the purchase and installation of solar systems.

"Melbourne has significantly higher rates of commercial and industrial buildings compared to other municipalities, and this offers a unique opportunity to increase the amount of solar energy produced in the city," the council said in a statement.

"The decreasing cost of solar plus an increase in electricity prices means that solar makes economic sense for most commercial and industrial buildings, helping to save on energy bills and reduce carbon emissions."

Rebates range from $2,000 to $4,000 depending on the system size. Minimum system size is 10kW and terms and conditions apply.

In addition to rebates the City of Melbourne is providing a free service guide to take businesses, step by step, through the process.

"Working with our solar expert partner Positive Charge, we will carry out energy use assessments to help businesses identify the best solar system for their building," the statement said.
