IKEA will convert its full lighting range to LED by 2016 as part of its plan to make sustainability a cornerstone of the business.

This means IKEA will only sell LED bulbs and LED lamps.

Moreover, IKEA will change more than one million light sources inside its stores.

The chief sustainability officer at the IKEA Group, Steve Howard, said the company is taking continuous steps to make its business more sustainable.

“LED is a light revolution. With household electricity bills continuing to rise rapidly and global energy consumption increasing, a small LED bulb can have a very big impact," Howard explained.

"Building on our belief that everyone should be able to afford to live more sustainably at home, we will make sure our LED prices are the lowest on the market."

When it comes to sustainability, Australia's HVAC&R industry has played a leading role.

Only yesterday a new national framework for energy efficiency ratings on appliances was introduced.

The Greenhouse Energy Minimum Standards (GEMS) legislation covers a wide range of products including televisions, fridges, air conditioners and washing machines.

If one million people changed one bulb each into LED, this would in terms of CO2 emissions correspond to taking almost 6,700 cars off the road, or planting 17 million trees per year.

LED is safe to use – it does not get hot and does not contain mercury.
