In an important step forward for community safety and fire protection, Standards Australia has published a new edition of AS 1851-2012 - Routine service of fire protection systems and equipment.

Standards Australia CEO Colin Blair said it is a critical document for building owners and managers, as well as the wider community.

“The standard is about ensuring fire systems are designed, commissioned, and installed to a level which will protect the community,” Blair said.

“It’s important that fire systems are maintained to ensure reliability, functionality and performance. This revised standard supports that objective."

The revision of AS 1851 follows extensive consultation and input from industry participants, regulators, government, fire and emergency services, and technical committee members who all provided significant assistance by engaging stakeholders throughout the revision process.

The Fire Protection Association of Australia CEO Scott Williams said the 2005 edition of AS 1851 did its job but "we are excited about the new edition."
