The NextGen 2026 edition of CCN magazine is here.

This is when we introduce our Top 20 technicians for 2026 and showcase emerging talent from all parts of Australia. It is a glimpse into the future of the HVACR industry.

It is also when I get to interview our Top 20 NextGen apprentices, it is a bittersweet reminder of life during those first few years in the workforce.

They are eager to learn and adult milestones like turning 21 cannot come fast enough.

They willingly embrace change, something that becomes so much harder to do as we age.

Talking to our NextGen Top 20 I was surprised by the high number of apprentices that saw HVACR as an industry that is truly making a difference.

They are keen to work in an environment that provides purpose and meaning. HVACR provides both.

It is an aspirational industry working towards a net zero future and that means embracing innovation, sustainable design and energy efficiency.

Today’s technician isn’t just a guardian of craftmanship, they are guardians of the environment.

Asked about workplace training and many of the apprentices thrive on collaboration, mentoring and being part of a team, demonstrating a high level of engagement.

Many of the technicians I spoke to are planning to get a dual trade making them a double threat and a great asset for any employer.

Maintaining this enthusiasm is critical to keep apprentices invested. Today’s industry is always evolving which means continuous learning to stay abreast of the latest technologies, digital tools and standards.

Today’s technician needs to understand the impact of renewables, electrification, refrigerant policies and many of the pressures shaping today’s built environment.

CCN is proud of its NextGen programme and grateful for the ongoing support provided by the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC). It’s an initiative that is making a difference.
