Queensland refrigeration apprentice Patrick Brennan will represent Australia at the 45th WorldSkills International Championships in August after winning gold at the Global Skills Challenge in Melbourne.

To secure his place on the Skillaroos team Brennan had to compete against fridgies from nine other countries.

More than 500 competitors from 15 countries took part in the event which was the final selection process for apprentices and trainees hoping to represent their country in Russia from August 22-27, 2019.

As part of the four days of competition Brennan had to install and commission a glycol refrigeration system. The final day was fault-finding and an air conditioning retrofit.

In addition to winning gold Brennan received the Best in Nation award for the highest points score in his country across all skills.

Brennan and his trainer, Carl Balke, will attend the 45th WorldSkills International Championship where an anticipated audience of 250,000 will watch competitors from 80 countries battle it out to be world champions.
