An updated 2026 guide to the health and safety risks associated with flammable refrigerants was released at ARBS 2026.
The Flammable Refrigerants Safety Guide (FRSG), which was first published in 2013 and updated in 2018, is a free resource for the HVACR industry.
It provides guidance on the safe handling, installation, servicing and management of a wide range of refrigerants including mildly flammable (A2L) and highly flammable (A3) refrigerants.
It was produced by the Australian Institute of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning & Heating (AIRAH) in partnership with ARBS, Refrigerants Australia and Refrigerant Reclaim Australia.
It has been updated at a time when flammable refrigerant use is expected to continue to grow as the HVACR industry transitions to a net zero future.
The guide covers essential standard AS/NZS ISO 817 and design standards AS/NZS 5149 (parts 1 to 4) in a simple, easy to ready format.
Importantly, it addresses the full lifecycle of HVACR equipment from charge limits to storage & transport, servicing and maintenance as well as emergency response.
It does not cover the use of flammable refrigerants in vehicle air conditioning systems.
Technicians get access to checklists and even specific training requirements necessary to work with flammable refrigerants.
